This is a nice, lighthearted comedy about dental supply salesman gets accidentally caught up in a cop's scheme to catch gun traffickers. I was wary of this before seeing it because these kinds of police comedy plot lines get pretty repetitive and dull, but this one was alright.
Samuel L. Jackson plays the role of a cop who is trying bust a gun smuggler who's in town. He sets up a meeting place to make a 'deal' with these guys, but when the gun lord's lackey gets there,he mistakes Eugene Levy, the supply salesman who is in town for a convention, for the so- called 'interested buyer', and gives him the gun by mistake. Samuel L. Jackson then comes in and arrests/ forces Eugene Levy to help him capture these guys by pretending to want to buy these guns.
This isn't a ground-breaking film, there are actually several other films just like it, but I really liked Eugene Levy's character. There was something about that oblivious, innocent, 'swell guy' character and his out-of-place reactions to the criminal situation. It's like bringing a grandmother to a rap concert or a skate park. Though this is neither Levy's or Jackson's best picture, they both bring sufficient talent so as to make the film watchable, but it's also lighthearted enough for you to let your guard down and just veg comfortably.
This is a cartoon about a boy named Timmy, and how he was lucky enough to obtain a pair of fairy god parents who grant him wishes. Timmy lives the unfortunate life of a 10- year old boy. His parents don't pay him much attention, his babysitter is the spawn of Satan who's only pleasure in life comes from making people's life miserable and making a buck, both of which she achieves when she babysits Timmy. He also receives the hateful attention of his teacher at school who seems to take great pleasure in giving F's, and who is obsessed with the idea that Timmy has fairy god parents that he must discover. Because of how unpleasant his life is, Timmy was granted fairy god parents to make his life better by granting him almost any wish he makes. The only catch is that if anyone discovers his fairy god parents, Timmy will lose them forever.
This is a really fun, imaginative show. The fairies, Cosmo and Wanda, are funny and the scrapes Timmy gets him into are engaging. Timmy makes a lot of small wishes, but the big wishes he makes either changes the life he's living in some way, or the entire world he's living in. Time and time again, Timmy is initially happy with the wish he made, but eventually comes to regret messing with reality, and tries to make everything the way it was before the wish. Teaching that no matter how bad your situation seems, it could always be much worse, and also that you should be careful of what you wish for because you just might get it... and it may not be what you expected.
The show incorporates several side stories into the plot, such as the fairy obsessed teacher trying to out his secret, Vicky and her evilness, an alien from another planet that he interacts with, comic book heroes, etc. and the cool thing they did with this show is to make these side stories recurring. Ordinarily, we may meet a side character just for one or two episodes, and then never hear of them again, but this show keeps all of the smaller story lines continuously running, making the entire show more intricate than it seems on the surface. They have a lot of room to play with (to stop the storyline from stagnating or repeating) and they make good use of it. Also, as a fan of the original Batman tv show, I appreciated the character of Catman, voiced by Adam West.
It's really a fun show to watch. Mostly for children, but an older audience can also find something to enjoy. It makes fun of itself, it's funny, sarcastic, romantic, dramatic, suspenseful, and more. But still for kids. Good show.
This is a hilariously sarcastic show about the lack of morality in big business. It's about a guy named Ted who works in the research department for a huge corporation that does everything. The show looks at the struggle between big business objectives, and human morality... and how the two sometimes have trouble connecting. It plays with the idea that 'there is no right or wrong in business, only success or failure'.
It's a situational comedy, so each episode deals with some issue that may have moral weight, like race, or family, the value of an employee as a person, and the episode will centre around a product that the company wants to test. For example, in the first episode the company wants to test whether the technology for cryogenic freezing is ready for human testing, so they decide to freeze one of the scientists who work in the lab. They go ahead and freeze him, but then three days later an accident in moving causes him to thaw out and he thereafter makes this piercing howl unconsciously. Ted's boss then wants to fire him, but also doesn't want him to sue the company for freezing him. There's also another funny bit where Ted tells the scientists to created an office chair out of this very uncomfortable material. They're able to do it, but it's a very uncomfortable chair to sit in, and they discover that discomfort actually helps with productivity because people are too uncomfortable to daydream or waste time at work. Each episode has a funny invention that, though maybe making the corporation more successful, is actually worse for humanity/ the environment/ etc.
The two women in Ted's life are his boss, Veronica, and Linda, one of the testers who sometimes plays the role of the 'conscience' of the company to Ted. He has complicated relationships with both of these women. Veronica is hilarious. She completely embodies the morality of the company and seems to have to human emotion or sense of moral right and wrong. She is one of the aspects of the show that makes it worth the watch. The two scientists are also funny. They have an almost husband and wife relationship in that they're always bickering and fighting, but need each other to be successful. They're too academic to really fit into the business world, and so are almost as funny as Veronica in their failure to connect with 'humanity'.
The show was cancelled, with only two seasons made... but don't let that fool you if this has slipped under your radar. It is hilarious, and worth the watch.
This is a high school drama about a girl named Mei whose parent's die. After their death she discovers that her estranged grandfather is very wealthy and she will inherit his empire, but first must attend a fancy all-girl reform school to become a lady. This school isn't just any school though. There are no desks, but rather cushy arm chairs and side tables and the campus is a third the size of Tokyo, but the weirdest thing of all about this school is that all of the girls must have butlers.
Mei is sort of resistant at the thought of becoming like these weird people, but eventually finds a reason to stay despite her reservations. Of course there are several people who are against her being there and make life hard for her. One girl in particular, the girl who has earned the highest rank on the lady- scale in the school, turns out to be her rival (in more ways than one), and even after she wins over some of her classmates, it is this adversary who is the real trial for Mei. The girl- butler dynamic is important to the plot. We learn as we watch that being a butler isn't just about waiting on someone hand and foot, but that there is a special bond between master and servant, and that the servants choose to serve.
I thought overall that the drama was interesting in theory, and the story line was well done, but the heroine was kind of pathetic. She was always whining or moping about. When she had a problem she would just stand there dumb-struck until someone saved her or until it was almost irrelevant for her to step forward. I also didn't like the actress who played her. She has one of those faces that seem to always be frowning, or smelling something disgusting, and yet her character was supposed to draw people to her and see how amazing she is. For the most part the characters weren't extremely attractive, but in addition to her unattractiveness, she couldn't act. If they had chosen a different actress to play the heroine this drama would have been much better. As it is though, it's still worth the watch.

This is a great movie about a woman, Ellen (Irene Dunne), who returns to her family after being shipwrecked on an island and declared dead. When she finally returns to her home, she speaks to her mother who tells her that her husband, Nick (Carey Grant), has remarried on that very day. Ellen goes to the honeymoon suite to try to find Nick, and when he sees her he's shocked and overjoyed... and acquires a whole new set of problems!
He has never stopped loving Ellen, but doesn't quite know how to break the news to his blushing (but of course snobby, potentially mean-spirited) bride. They all end up going back to the house and Ellen tells Bianca (new wife) and the kids, who don't know who she is, that she is a cousin from the south. The new wife gets more and more jealous of the bond between Nick and Ellen, and Nick seems to find it increasingly difficult to tell her that Ellen is in fact his first wife.
In the meantime, Nick finds out that Ellen was not alone for those seven years, but was stranded with a man. Nick completely drops his issue with Bianca and goes out of his mind with jealousy trying to find this man. When he finally does, he discovers that the man is very attractive, and is in love with Ellen!!
Just when things can't get any more complicated, Nick is arrested for bigamy. How will he get out of this scrape and will he and Ellen ever be able to be together!?
I really enjoyed this movie. It was a lighthearted, romantic, screwball comedy with a cheeky heroine and a hilarious scenario. Fun for the whole family!
This is a screw-ball comedy starring Lucille Ball as the klutzy, energetic, seemingly dull-witted stenographer, Miss Grant. She was at the bottom of her stenography class and had a very low chance of graduating, but on the day of her last class a business man came to her class to choose a secretary, and of all of her more qualified classmates he chooses her to work in his office! She is excited and ready to work hard for her new employer at what she thinks is a real estate office. Little does she know her new employer is just using real estate as a cover and he and his associates are actually bookies. They only chose Miss Grant because she seemed to be the stupidest girl in her class, and wouldn't figure out what they were up to.
Much to the chagrin of her new employers, Miss Grant charges headlong into the business. She finds clients and even sets up a deal for the company to buy a large and expensive piece of land to build houses on. They try to get rid of her, but when that fails due to her sense of duty to the people she's trying to help, they put her in charge of an operation doomed to failure. Things seem to be going downhill until Mr. Richmond's conscience kicks in and decides to sell himself into the service of his former associates in order to bail out Miss Grant. She then goes off to save him.
The film is very funny. To those who enjoyed the I Love Lucy tv show, this is the same kind of comedy. Miss Grant is a very strong, proactive heroine. Even though she isn't the best at what she does she struggles hard to try to find a place for herself in the world before succumbing to the life of a housewife, as is expected of her. She attacks any assignment given to her whole-heartedly, and even though she can be a bit slow at times, she has a good heart which endears her to the audience.
This is a great comedy about two reluctant girls, Mary and Rachel, who meet up and become best friends when they are sent to a convent school. Mary is a very head-strong, mischievous girl and comes up with several 'scathingly brilliant ideas' for her and Rachel to get up to and more often than not these escapades get them in trouble with mother superior. The girls are your average delinquents, skipping out on classes and trying to spice up an otherwise unpleasant experience, but they put their hearts into everything they do, which more often than not ends up in their scrubbing pots.
I guess one of the first things I'd like to say about this movie is that though it takes place in a convent, there's no more religion in it than there is in The Sound of Music. When I attempt to recommend this movie to people, the one who aren't religious don't want to watch it because they think it will be all about religion and the ones who are want to watch it for the same reason. But it's not a religious film at all. There's more focus placed on the trouble the girls get themselves into and the situations they're faced with than there is on this movie try to convert you. Yes they talk about God and how great religion is, but that's how society was back then, and many older films will have religious sentiments expressed... but unless you are very insecure about your own stance on morality, there is no reason to avoid an otherwise pleasant and comedic film.
Onto the film itself. I really enjoyed the characters. Mary was such a headstrong girl and was very reluctant to be sent to the school in the first place, but she never had any malicious thoughts or intentions about anybody. Her schemes that got both her and Rachel into trouble were only thought up out of boredom. She's one of those people in your life that will leave a mark on your memory. She's like a shooting star, a bright, energetic person who will always be proactive and optimistic no matter the situation. Rachel on the other hand was more of a follower, but was just as energetic and rebellious as Mary.
The film is a comedy, but is not slapstick humour, nor is it like present day cheesy Hannah Montana ish comedy either. It's more situational humour, like I Love Lucy. It's not all comedy either. There are a few serious moments, and actually one very sad moment that always makes me tear up. The scene when they're in the old folks home and Mary overhears mother superior consoling an old woman whose family won't be visiting her this Christmas. Gets me every time. But the serious moments make the funny moments that much funnier, and make the film over all that much more memorable.
This is one of my favourite cartoons ever! It's hilarious! The greatest metal band of all time!!! With all of the metal stereotypes. I'm guaranteed at least one chuckle per episode. If I had to pick a favourite character it'd be a toss up between Toki and Murderface, but I kind of like them all. The stream of consciousness aspects of the dialog are amusing.
The show is about a metal band named Dethklok, and the situations the members of the band get into. It's stereotypically 'metal'. They live in a Gothic castle, there are scenes with gratuitous gore, crazy guitar solos, etc. It's very tongue in cheek, if you're a metal fan. If not it might just be weirdly morbid. They even have an album out, and the songs are somewhat comical also.
I enjoy this show. It's funny... I want to say it's like an r rated Simpsons, but it's more arbitrary and it mocks things more openly. I'm guaranteed at least one chuckle per episode and though sometimes I feel like one or two skits are trying too hard, for the most part it's a great way to pass the time. I like that a lot of the skits are short (like the flipping of the channels they show in the beginning) because any longer and they'd loose their appeal, so kudos to the writers on that one, and sadly I enjoy that it promotes the short attention span because I like thinking, a lot, but sometimes a break's nice. And finally I like what they mock and I think they do a good job of it.
Invader Zim has to be one of my favourite shows. It's one of those things that has an almost cultish effect on people, well the people who get into it anyways. There are so many awesome quotes in this show... like classic, change you're life-funny quotes. Me and my brother sometimes have Zim quote battles and see who can come up with the most quotes. And we say them to each other in everyday conversation, or even if we aren't talking, a quote from Zim will break the silence. It's like this when I find other people into Zim too. When I find out they love it too I'll say a quote and they'll say one back to me... it's like finding a long lost sibling, I love it.
The show itself seems like it's going to be slow-paced when you start watching it, and I guess it can be a bit. It also has a kind of dark atmosphere, so it is to be watched in moderation. I wouldn't recommend watching a whole season in one go unless you're in the mood for it. If you watch too much at once the atmosphere will get to you a bit and the pacing can be depressing, which is an odd contrast to the comedic aspect of the show. The characters are amazing. Zim is introduced as an idiot, an outcast, and really bad at what he was meant to do, but I don't think he is the failure we would think he is. Zim reminds me of how geniuses are thought to be crazy be those around them and only later are they appreciated. Zim is not a genius, but I do think that he's under estimated by everyone on the show. He is successful if some of what he sets out to do, but he's like the coyote from the roadrunner show, he's just got bad luck. Dib, Zim's nemesis, is most relatable because he is the second main character of the show and we get to see his personality the most of all the characters. Even though Zim is the main character we don't really relate to him and get inside his head but almost see him through the eyes of someone else. In the episodes focusing on Dib, maybe it's because he complains out loud a lot or because he's always searching for something, but it feels more like we are going on the adventure with Dib rather than watching from a distance like with Zim. Dib is also unappreciated by the other characters, but like zim he's actually really smart and not crazy at all. Gaz, Dib's sister, is a great character and I wish there were more episodes focused on her. She's really irritable, but she's not like any other person on the show in that she has this inner strength, which sets her apart as the odd one out. An example of this would be the episode where Pustulio (Zim's pimple) was hypnotizing everyone, but it didn't get Gaz because she didn't give it the time of day. She is shown in this way in a lot of episodes. I guess the fact that the show's focus isn't really on her, even though she is one of the main characters is almost an example of her character. Her reluctance to engage in anything makes her a really interesting, and though we'd like to see more of her, maybe the fact that we can't is evidence of her personality. And of course there's Gir, Zim's robot. ... Little need be said of Gir other than the fact that Gir is awesome. If there was no Gir the show wouldn't be what it is and a lot of the comedy is because of Gir, not all, but a lot. Unlike the other characters, it seems Gir's only purpose is for comedic effect. Gir lightens the dark atmosphere of the show.
Invader Zim is like metal (the music) in that it has a core of die hard fans, but the rest of the world kind of does really know about it. It's a hugely funny show. The comedy is kind of dry and satirical, and slightly over the top and... awesome. Just awesome. The pants command me! Don't ignore my veins!!
This was a good book. I rarely laugh out loud while reading but this book is really funny, if you have issues about showing emotions in public read this book at home. The concept was interesting and told in an easily readable way. Though the plot was predictable, I didn't mind knowing what was going to happen as I read because the way the author writes... I don't want to say makes you feel like you don't know, but I guess knowing doesn't matter. The only negative comment I have about the book was that sometimes I felt like the author was trying to shock me with what he said, or the emotions in a certain passage seemed fabricated or covered by a smugness or disdain, but this was a faint undertone and isn't really representative of the book on the whole. It was a good book, my first by him, but it wont be the last. I recommend.
I wasn't old enough to know this existed when it came out, but after hearing some good things about it I gave it a shot, and it was a pretty good film. I can see how it could have a cultish affect on people, it's one of those films. It's about this guy who's a heroine addict and how he struggles with his addiction, but it isn't a depressing movie. It can be kind of funny, a sick kind of funny. It isn't a movie about how drugs are bad and how they can destroy your family and mess up your life, just about how they can mess up your life. And this is passed off as both something to pity and something to laugh at... but it is also not a light-hearted movie fluffing off the issue. It is a raw look at the life of a guy who goes in and out of heroine addictions.. but doesn't really care. In his eyes it's just another aspect of his life at the moment. Worth the watch.
I came across this film on IMDb through Sarah Polley oddly enough (she got a thanks for it) so decided to watch it and I'd have to say it was pretty good. The title suggests that there will be a lot of sex, and while that's true in theory, it's not so much about the sex as it is the relationship between the couples. It actually skipped over the sex at points to move from one couple to the next. It was more about the relationships. The movie followed 5 couples through one sexual experience. The couples were named according to status 'the couple', 'the friends', etc. and the movie was cut up into the stages a couple goes through when they have sex. In each part we'd get to see how the stereotypical type of couple would react to each other in that stage of the process. All of the couples go about it differently and they have problems... it's very 'real'. I was kind of surprised watching it because in a lot of movies the sex scene is always smooth and.. well, sexy, but in this movie the couples talked to each other a lot throughout the whole movie. There was a lot of doubt on both sides and for every situation there was at least one point where you thought it wasn't going to happen. They made mistakes, or it was weird and they had to fix it. Basically it was a movie about the social aspect of sex. It wasn't as contrived as the big Hollywood, action movie, sex scene. It was a story about how different people who love each other in different ways wanted to get together, and how they did. But as I say, there wasn't any more nudity in it than you'd find in a contemporary teen comedy, and it has a substantial story line that's actually trying to say something about the romantic life of sex. It was funny and it was romantic. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone age appropriate. Most of the movies coming out today with sex scenes idealize and stereotype sex, but don't actually go beyond the physical. Because of this it could be said that sex in the media is poorly represented and is cheapened by either the desire to draw people to a movie as a selling point, or to keep the story line going because the plot is sorely lacking in anything worth telling a story about. This movie takes apart the sex we see on TV and goes beyond the physical, makes it relatable to real life, actually has something decent to say.
